Vladimir Andreenkov’s artistic practice occupies a distinctive position within the legacy of twentieth-century Constructivism, extending its formal vocabulary into a sustained investigation of perception, structure, and the internal logic of visual order. Rather than adopting Constructivism as a historical style, Andreenkov approaches it as a method of inquiry, one that brings together analytical precision, imaginative intuition, and an enduring commitment to the generative potential of geometric form.
The decisive shift in his practice occurred during the 1960s, when he gradually moved beyond representational imagery toward an examination of the structural principles underlying visible reality. Rejecting description in favour of analysis, Andreenkov sought not to reproduce appearances but to articulate the latent rhythms, tensions, and proportional relationships through which the visual world is constituted. Form became an autonomous field of investigation, capable of revealing relationships that exist beyond the contingencies of direct observation.
During the 1970s and 1980s, following the culmination of the *Transformations* series, drawing once again assumed a central role within his practice. This renewed engagement emerged from an unexpected source: while designing the layout of a publication, Andreenkov became increasingly aware of the spatial dialogue generated between the rectangle and its diagonal through the placement of photographic images. What initially appeared as a compositional observation developed into a fundamental structural principle that would inform the subsequent evolution of his work. The interaction of line, proportion, interval, and geometric tension gradually became the basis of an increasingly refined visual language.
These investigations culminated in the *Harmonies* series, initiated during the early 1990s and continuing to the present day. Far from constituting a closed body of work, the series represents an open and evolving system through which Andreenkov continually reconsiders the relationships between order and freedom, intuition and rational construction. Each composition functions simultaneously as an autonomous visual structure and as a site of ongoing inquiry, where equilibrium is never imposed but continually negotiated. Geometry, in this context, is neither decorative nor reductive; it becomes an instrument for thinking, a means of articulating states of perception that resist narrative or symbolic interpretation.
Throughout the entirety of his career, music has occupied a central position within Andreenkov’s creative process. Its presence extends beyond inspiration, providing a conceptual analogue to the structural and rhythmic principles that underpin his visual language. The organisation of intervals, cadence, variation, and resolution finds a parallel within the measured relationships of his compositions. In those exceptional moments when a work attains complete formal coherence, the experience assumes, for the artist, an almost musical inevitability: an instant in which intuition and structure converge with complete clarity.
Andreenkov’s oeuvre ultimately proposes a conception of abstraction grounded not in reduction but in discovery.
