Bernd Ribbeck’s paintings occupy a space between geometric abstraction, ornament, and something more elusive: the suggestion that form itself might carry psychological or spiritual meaning. Constructed from circles, triangles, radiating lines, grids, and repeated symmetries, his compositions appear at once rigorously ordered and insistently handmade. Their geometry promises clarity, yet the more closely one looks, the less stable that order becomes.
Ribbeck develops his images through a slow process of accumulation. Lines are drawn, repeated, interrupted, and overlaid; surfaces are built up through layers of paint, pencil, marker, and other graphic materials. Rather than disguising the labor of their construction, the works retain its traces. Slight irregularities, shifts in pressure, visible corrections, and changes in density give the geometry a distinctly human register. Precision is continually challenged by touch.
The resulting forms draw upon a broad visual history without settling into a single genealogy. They can evoke early modernist abstraction, Constructivism, Op art, architectural diagrams, folk ornament, cosmological charts, or the visual structures of ritual objects. Yet Ribbeck does not simply quote these traditions. He treats them as part of a shared vocabulary of signs, forms through which cultures have attempted to organize space, describe invisible systems, and give structure to experiences that resist language.
Central to Ribbeck’s practice is the tension between repetition and difference. A circle may contain another circle, a geometric structure may expand outward from a central point, or a field of lines may establish a rhythm only to be disturbed by subtle asymmetries. Patterns that initially appear systematic reveal themselves to be highly particular. Each work seems to establish its own internal laws and then quietly test their limits.
Color intensifies this sense of unstable order. Ribbeck often places sharply contrasting or densely layered colors within tightly bounded geometric structures, producing surfaces that appear simultaneously flat and spatial. Forms seem to advance, recede, rotate, or vibrate. The eye is drawn toward centers that promise resolution but instead generate further movement. Looking becomes less an act of decoding than a sustained encounter with rhythm, concentration, and perceptual uncertainty.
This ambiguity distinguishes Ribbeck’s work from the impersonal ideal traditionally associated with geometric abstraction. His paintings do not present geometry as a universal language freed from subjectivity. On the contrary, they expose geometry to time, labor, hesitation, and imperfection. Systems become vulnerable. Symmetry becomes approximate. What might at first resemble an emblem or diagram reveals itself as the record of repeated decisions made by hand.
There is also a meditative dimension to these works. Their concentric structures and recurring motifs invite prolonged attention, while their density resists immediate comprehension. They operate somewhere between image and object, diagram and ornament, rational construction and intuitive speculation. The viewer is confronted with forms that seem strangely familiar yet remain difficult to name-as though they belonged to an unknown system whose logic can be sensed but never fully explained.
Across his practice, Ribbeck transforms the vocabulary of abstraction into a field of tension between control and contingency. His work asks what happens when seemingly universal forms are subjected to the irregularity of human making. Geometry, in his hands, is not an escape from the world but a way of returning to some of its oldest questions: how order is created, how meaning attaches itself to form, and how the simplest elements, line, circle, repetition, color, can become carriers of something far more difficult to define.
