Works by Julian Tauland

Read moreJulian Tauland (*1972) is a French-Albanian painter whose artistic journey is deeply rooted in both cultural heritage and a synthesis of abstract and figurative traditions. Based in Auvers-sur-Oise, the historic village intertwined with Vincent van Gogh’s legacy, Tauland’s oeuvre navigates a dynamic interplay between chaos and order, figuration and abstraction. His work centers on the concept of interlacing, creating multidimensional pictorial spaces where memory, energy, and movement coalesce into a vibrant visual narrative.
Introduced to art at an early age by his painter uncle, Tauland’s foundational years were marked by intensive study at the Tirana School of Fine Arts in Albania. His journey was profoundly shaped by the political upheavals surrounding the fall of the Berlin Wall, leading him into exile. In Paris, he became immersed in Albanian and international artistic circles, notably engaging with Valdet Hamidi, Vladimir Veličković, and Dado, among others. These encounters, alongside his studies at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, where he earned a Master’s in Image and Living Arts, enriched his practice with elements of expressionism, abstract expressionism, and innovative digital techniques.
A pivotal phase of his career has been his residence at the Van Gogh Artists’ Residence in Auvers-sur-Oise since 2008, supported by the French Ministry of Culture. There, his artistic philosophy further evolved under the influence of the CoBrA movement, an avant-garde collective emphasizing spontaneous, experimental creation free from conventional constraints. Tauland’s work reflects this ethos, embodying a spontaneous, energetic approach that continues to explore the limitless possibilities of color and form.
Julian Tauland redefines the role of the artist as both creator and philosopher. By embracing traditional artistry while seamlessly integrating modern techniques, his work connects past, present, and future artistic expressions. His artistic journey reflects a commitment to exploring deeper meanings in art, challenging conventional aesthetics, and engaging in a continuous dialogue with cultural history.
